You may have been having some really good conversations with someone that you met on an online dating site only to later discover that there is a police report with their name on it.

Perhaps you were initially hesitant to google this person.

However, conversations have been going so well with your match that you may have felt the need to do it before you allowed yourself to become more emotionally invested in them.

Do understand that finding a police report on someone that you matched with on an online dating site doesn’t necessarily spell doom and gloom.

There are always two sides to a story.

If you have read something in the police report that has given you pause or made you uneasy about your match, it may not always be the smart thing to make an immediate assumption of their guilt.

A police report is exactly that, a police report.

It is not a definitive indication of guilt.

Unless you dig further and discover a conviction of some sort on this person, you can’t really make the assumption that they were guilty of whatever they were being accused of on the police report.

It is natural to now have some doubts about this interaction.

After all, this is information that your match has yet to divulge to you.

Your match may not have divulged this information to you because the both of you may not have met in person yet and it may still be relatively early in this interaction.

You should take all of this into account as you try to figure out what to do.

At this stage, being that it is still early in your interaction with this match, it may be best to avoid mentioning the police report.

Doing so may make your match feel as though you are already accusing them of something when you have barely gotten to know them.

Do ensure that you are also conducting conversations with other dating prospects on the online dating site that you are using so that you aren’t putting all of your romantic hopes on this one person.

It is best to give this person the opportunity to bring up the police report or the incident that led to it on their own.

Your best chance at this would be to wait until a good degree of rapport has been built between the both of you.

Now, if you reach the point where you feel that enough rapport has been built and this person is still not forthcoming about this particular issue, you can force the issue.

However, do so with tact.

Now that you have built a good degree of rapport with them, you could jokingly tell them about something that they may find if they were to do a background check on you.

It could be something as innocuous as spray painting graffiti when you were younger or you could just make something up.

After they respond to this, you can use that moment as your opportunity to naturally segue into asking them about what you would find if you were to do a background check on them.

This would be their opportunity to talk about the incident that led to that police report.

If they don’t, this may be your cue to come right out and tell them about what you found.

You would be well within your rights to do so by this point.

Once they tell you their side of the story about what led to that police report, you would have to use your better judgment on whether it would be worth it to continue interacting with this match.
