He Said We're In A Relationship But He's Pulling Away

He came back after ghosting. He told me when he was out of town his uncle died and he stayed longer than he originally told me he would. Then we wanted to get together. He said he would let me know when and he never did. The last thing I pointed out was he was starting to get protective and then he faded for a day. How do I keep him from fading completely again?
